Bench Accounting Alternatives (2026): What Happened to Bench, and Where Startups Go Now

Bench is trading again, but it is not the company founders signed up with. It shut down on December 27, 2024, its Canadian parent went bankrupt on January 7, 2025, and the business was sold to Recruiter.com Ventures Inc., the Employer.com side, for C$13 million. The relaunched Bench charges $199, $399 or $649 a month, and its March 2026 terms add overage fees of $215 to $245 an hour above an hour allowance its pricing page does not publish. For a venture-backed startup that needs accrual books and a C-corp return, Pilot Core, Zeni, Fondo, Kruze or Inkle are the closer fits; Kick, Digits and Puzzle cover the do-it-yourself end. Finally, an alternative several lists still recommend, wound down on September 8, 2026.

March 7, 2025, 5pm ETData download window for departing customers closes
April 9, 2025US court recognises the Canadian proceeding (Chapter 15, Delaware)
March 3, 2026New terms of service add a per-plan "Service Time Allocation" and hourly overage fees

Sources: Bench's archived closure notice, the trustee's first report (March 5, 2025), the Employer.com press release and bench.co/terms, read October 12, 2026.

Three conflicts between sources, stated rather than resolved. Employer.com called it an acquisition on December 30, 2024, but the trustee's report shows only a letter of intent then; the sale was signed in February and recognised in the US in April 2025. The press release says operations stopped on December 28; Bench's own notice says December 27. And bench.co still says "Trusted by 35,000+ business owners", while the trustee counted "over 10,000 customers" at filing. The same report puts prepaid customer balances at about US$5.6 million, owed as unsecured claims.

Some ranking pages also say Bench "rebranded to Mainstreet". We found no primary source for that. Bench's own About page says it operates "as an Employer.com company", and Mainstreet (now mainstreet.ai) sells R&D tax credit work, not bookkeeping, so it is not a Bench alternative.

The plan prices are clear; the risk is in the terms. Since the March 3, 2026 terms, each plan includes a Service Time Allocation, and time above it is billed at $215 an hour (1 to 10 hours over), $220 (11 to 25) and $245 (26+), capped at 1000% of the monthly plan fee per billing period: up to $6,490 on top of the $649 plan in a bad month. After three consecutive periods over the allowance Bench can move you to a higher plan. The terms say the allowance is specified on the pricing page; the pricing page we read does not show it. The January 2025 terms had no overage clause. Plans auto-renew for the same term unless you give notice 15 days (monthly) or 60 days (annual) ahead, and fees are non-refundable.

Bench is also built for small businesses: the $199 Light plan is for companies with $250,000 or less in yearly revenue. An archived Bench FAQ from May and July 2026 says it supports cash and accrual accounting; the current pricing page does not say so, so confirm before signing if you need accrual books.

How we picked the alternatives

For a US startup leaving or avoiding Bench: a published price, accrual books available (needed once annual contracts create deferred revenue), a C-corp tax return in-house or a clear hand-off, books you can take with you, and a company still taking customers. Prices were read on each vendor's page on October 12, 2026.

The alternatives

Pilot

The largest startup-focused service. Essentials is $99 a month but cash-basis only; accrual books start on Core at $299 a month billed annually and rise with monthly expenses to $999 (to $200,000 a month), plus onboarding equal to one month and C-corp tax from $2,450 a year. Pilot keeps your books in QuickBooks Online, which is the portability test Bench failed. Full plan breakdown on our startup bookkeeping cost page.

Zeni

AI-assisted bookkeeping with a team: $494 a month billed annually for pre-revenue companies, $719 with revenue, tax plans at $2,499 and $3,899 a year. It suits a funded startup that wants bookkeeping, tax and payroll from one vendor. See Zeni pricing.

Fondo

Built for Delaware C-corps from pre-seed to Series B. Monthly close is "as low as $399" (a limited-time price, down from $499), quarterly $1,198 a quarter, annual close $950 a year; TaxPass from $1,450 covers the federal return, one state and the Delaware franchise tax filing (check the amount with our franchise tax calculator). The pricing page does not say cash or accrual.

Inkle (which took over Finally's customers)

Finally was on most Bench-alternative lists. On September 8, 2026 its operator, Backoffice.co, Inc., entered an assignment for the benefit of creditors and is being wound down; its notice says "Finally's bookkeeping business has been acquired by Inkle". Inkle offers free accounting software and done-for-you bookkeeping from $49 a month, accrual basis with revenue recognition, priced by transaction volume and billed monthly. The from-price is a floor; expect more once you have payroll and many transactions.

Kruze, Burkland, inDinero

Higher-touch firms. Kruze runs $650 to $850 a month (Basic) with accrual on every tier, but takes only companies that have raised at least $500K in venture capital. Burkland's accounting starts at $495, $665 and $1,025 a month. inDinero starts at $750 (Essential) and $1,250 (Growth, accrual managed by controllers), tax extra and unpriced.

Kick, Digits, Puzzle (software you run)

Kick is where Bench itself sent customers in December 2024, though Kick says it "is not affiliated with Bench in any way". Its accrual ledger starts on Plus at $100 a month. Digits charges $65 to $250 a month, accruals from Core at $100. Puzzle costs $30 to $360 a month and now also sells a full-service tier from $619 (Puzzle pricing). None of the three files your taxes.

If you are leaving because of cost

ProviderYear 1, pre-seed ($40K/mo expenses)Year 1, seed ($150K/mo)
Bench Bookkeeping + Tax (annual)$6,230 + any overage$6,230 + any overage
Burkland accounting (from)$5,940$7,980
Fondo monthly close + TaxPass (promo)$6,238$6,238
Kruze (low end of band)$7,800$10,200
Zeni + tax (billed annually)$8,427$12,527
Pilot Core + C-corp tax + onboarding$9,717$13,337
Kick (Basic, then Plus), software only$480$1,200
Digits Core, software only$1,200$1,200

Our cost model at each vendor's lowest published price, read October 12, 2026: 12 months of bookkeeping plus onboarding and the C-corp return where the vendor sells them (0 and 1 extra state); accrual from seed; Bench excludes overage fees; software excludes any accountant. Series A spending is above every published band, so it is quote only.

Bench's flat $6,230 looks cheap at seed, but at $150K a month of expenses the unpublished hour allowance is what decides the bill, and that is the number to get in writing before you sign.

How to move your books

  • Get a general ledger, not only statements. At the 2024 shutdown Bench offered year-end financials and uploaded documents; it ran its own platform, not QuickBooks. Ask for a full transaction-level export.
  • Prefer a provider that books into a ledger you own (QuickBooks Online, Xero or the vendor's software with export), so the next move does not repeat the Bench problem.
  • Check renewal notice dates before you cancel: 60 days for Bench annual plans.
  • Budget for catch-up if a year is open: Fondo from $950, Puzzle from $300 per month of books.

Not hands-on tested yet: we have not run a live account on Bench or the alternatives above. Prices and terms come from each vendor's published pricing page, terms and help docs, read on October 12, 2026.

Frequently asked questions

Is Bench still in business?

Yes, under new ownership. Bench shut down on December 27, 2024, was bought out of Canadian bankruptcy by Recruiter.com Ventures Inc. (Employer.com) and has operated under the Bench name since January 2025.

What happened to Bench accounting?

It closed its platform on December 27, 2024 and filed for bankruptcy in Canada on January 7, 2025. The trustee sold the business for C$13 million in February 2025.

Did Bench rebrand to Mainstreet?

We found no primary source for that. Bench says it operates as an Employer.com company. Mainstreet is an R&D tax credit service, not a bookkeeping firm.

Can I still get my old Bench data?

The download window for customers who left at the shutdown closed on March 7, 2025. If you are a current Bench customer, ask Bench for a transaction-level ledger export before you leave.

Is Finally still an option?

No. Finally wound down on September 8, 2026, and Inkle now holds its bookkeeping contracts.
