Chargebee Alternatives (2026): 6 Billing Tools for Early-Stage SaaS, With Real Fees
Between July 16 and August 7, 2026 Chargebee replaced its free Starter plan (free until $250K of cumulative billing) with Flow: $0 + 0.80% or $99 + 0.65% of monthly invoicing volume, from the first dollar. For an early-stage SaaS the closest swaps are Stripe Billing (0.7%, no contract), Polar and Paddle (merchants of record that also handle sales tax and VAT) and Recurly ($249/month, first $40K of monthly billing included). Lago suits teams that self-host; Maxio fits later, from $599/month on an annual agreement.
Why people leave Chargebee
The dated evidence is on Chargebee's own pricing page, read through the Wayback Machine:
- June 2023 to July 16, 2026: Starter was "Free for the first USD 250K of cumulative billing, then 0.75% on billing".
- From the August 7, 2026 capture (live on October 11, 2026): Flow, "$0 + 0.80%" or "$99 + 0.65%" of monthly invoicing volume, no free allowance. The $99 option is cheaper above $66K a month.
- August 31, 2026: three Enterprise features moved to paid add-ons (logged by PricingSaaS, confirmed on the live page).
In money: at $10K MRR the old plan was free for 25 months; Flow costs $80 a month, $960 in year one. At $50K MRR year one goes from about $2,625 to $4,800. At $250K MRR Flow is cheaper than before ($1,724 a month against $1,875 at 0.75%).
A conflict on Chargebee's side: the pricing page's structured data and a help article still describe the retired free-to-$250K plan. We treat the visible Flow widget as current. One free route remains: Chargebee for Startups, free until $1M of cumulative billing, by application, for startups that raised under $5M and sit in a partner accelerator or VC network.
How we ordered the alternatives
By fit for a SaaS company between first revenue and about $3M ARR, not by fame: (1) all-in cost at $10K and $50K MRR from published prices; (2) self-serve, no sales call or annual contract; (3) who carries sales tax and VAT (a merchant of record does, a billing engine does not); (4) how hard it is to leave; (5) still actively sold and developed.
1. Stripe Billing
The default swap if your Chargebee site already runs on Stripe as its gateway. Stripe Billing charges 0.7% of billing volume pay as you go, or $620 a month on a one-year contract for up to $100K of monthly billing volume with 0.67% above that. Card processing (2.9% + 30¢ for US cards) sits on top, as under Chargebee. You still own sales tax. Advanced usage billing now runs through Metronome, acquired in January 2026. More on Stripe Billing pricing and Chargebee vs Stripe Billing.
2. Polar
A merchant of record with published tiers, suited to indie, developer-tool and usage-billed AI products. Polar Starter is free plus 5% + 50¢ per transaction; Pro is $20 a month plus 3.8% + 40¢; Growth $100 plus 3.6% + 35¢; Scale $400 plus 3.4% + 30¢. Non-US cards add 1.5%. Processing, sales tax and VAT are inside that fee. Organizations created before May 27, 2026 keep an Early Member rate (4% + 40¢, plus 0.5% on subscriptions). Status: active, self-serve.
3. Paddle
The other main merchant of record here. Paddle charges 5% + 50¢ per checkout transaction with no monthly fee, covering payments, global tax, fraud and chargebacks; a currency conversion margin is extra and high-volume sellers can ask for custom pricing. Status: active. See Paddle pricing and Paddle vs Stripe.
4. Recurly
The closest like-for-like billing engine. Recurly Starter is $249 a month plus 0.9% of billing volume, with the first $40K of billing each month included, and a 90-day free trial. On platform fees alone it beats Chargebee Flow between $31,125 and $84,000 of monthly billing. All-Access is quote-only with a "$1M billing volume minimum" (period not stated). Conflict: the pricing page says "20+ payment gateways", the card docs list 14. Status: active. See Recurly pricing.
5. Lago
For engineering-led teams billing usage, credits or tokens. Lago is open source under AGPL-3.0 and free to self-host; its GitHub repository had a commit on October 9, 2026. Lago Premium is "Contact us", with dunning and tax integrations listed as add-ons. Hosting and upgrades are yours.
6. Maxio
Billing, revenue recognition and SaaS metrics in one product, formed from Chargify and SaaSOptics (merger announced April 13, 2022). Maxio Grow starts at $599 a month for up to $100K of monthly billings, on an annual agreement by default; Scale is quote-only. Vendr reports a median of $45,900 a year across 39 purchases. It fits a B2B SaaS past about $1M ARR, not a pre-seed team.
Also checked, not recommended as a fresh start
- Lemon Squeezy (5% + 50¢, merchant of record): owned by Stripe since July 2024. Its January 28, 2026 update admits "slower support responses and less frequent product updates"; the team now builds Stripe Managed Payments (generally available since April 29, 2026, 3.5% on top of Stripe Payments fees). A migration path is promised, no date.
- Orb: quote-only usage billing, acquired by Adyen (announced June 11, closed July 1, 2026). Vendr reports a $50,000 a year median.
- Zuora: private (Silver Lake and GIC) since February 14, 2025; no public prices; Vendr reports a $170,000 a year median. Enterprise only.

Platform fee plus card processing at Stripe's US rate (2.9% + 30¢) wherever the tool's own fee does not include it. A merchant of record also collects and files sales tax and VAT. "pts" = share of revenue, which comes straight off gross margin. Cheapest plan per tool at each volume. Fees verified on the vendors' pricing pages, latest on October 11, 2026. Run your own numbers.
In gross-margin points at $10K MRR: Chargebee Flow 5.20, Stripe Billing 5.10. Card processing dominates both, so that move saves a tenth of a point. Polar (6.00) and Paddle (7.50) cost more but include tax filing. Recurly is 6.89 at $10K, because the $249 floor dominates, and close to Stripe Billing at $50K. Polar assumes US cards; add 1.5% on non-US sales. Run your own numbers.
How to migrate off Chargebee
- Find where cards live. Chargebee bills through a gateway, so saved cards sit with that gateway. Staying on it keeps the move a data-mapping job; a merchant of record becomes the seller, so ask how it imports payment methods.
- Map plans, coupons and renewal dates, and cut over at renewal so nobody is billed twice.
- Rebuild revenue schedules first if Chargebee RevRec produced them: SaaS revenue recognition, deferred revenue.
Not hands-on tested yet: we have not run a live account on Chargebee or the alternatives above. Prices and terms come from each vendor's published pricing page and help docs, read on October 11, 2026.
