Chargebee vs Stripe Billing (2026): Cost at Every Stage and How to Choose

Pick Stripe Billing if you already take payments on Stripe, sell in one or two currencies and want the lowest platform fee: 0.7% of billing volume, or $620 a month and up on a 1-year plan. Pick Chargebee if you want to keep the option of several payment gateways (40+ supported), need built-in sales tax without a per-transaction tax fee, or expect contract terms and multi-entity later. On our three founder scenarios Chargebee costs $10 a month more at $10K MRR, $50 more at $50K and $224 more at $250K. Neither is a merchant of record, so you stay responsible for sales tax and VAT either way.

The most common confusion first: Chargebee is not a payment processor in a normal setup. It runs on top of a gateway, very often Stripe. If you use Chargebee with Stripe, you pay Stripe's card processing plus Chargebee's percentage, but not Stripe Billing's 0.7%. The real choice is which billing layer sits on your gateway.

Platform fee plus card processing at Stripe's US rate (2.9% + 30¢) wherever the tool's own fee does not include it. A merchant of record also collects and files sales tax and VAT. "pts" = share of revenue, which comes straight off gross margin. Cheapest plan per tool at each volume. Fees verified on the vendors' pricing pages, latest on October 11, 2026. Run your own numbers.

In gross-margin points: Chargebee takes 0.80 at $10K and $50K MRR and 0.69 at $250K; Stripe Billing takes 0.70 on pay as you go and 0.60 at $250K on its $1,500 annual plan. Chargebee's $99 option only beats Stripe's pay-as-you-go 0.7% above about $198K a month, and Stripe's annual plans stay cheaper. The gap is small next to card processing, which runs around 4 points at every stage with Stripe's 2.9% + 30¢. Run your own numbers.

Chargebee moved to Flow between May and August 2026 (archive snapshots of May 23 and August 13). Before that, Starter was free for the first $250K of cumulative billing, then 0.75%, and Performance cost $7,188 a year. Many comparison pages still show those plans. Stripe replaced its old 0.5% Starter and 0.8% Scale Billing plans with 0.7% on July 10, 2024, so pages quoting "0.5% to 0.8%" are out of date. The monthly plans are annual subscriptions paid monthly, with 0.67% on volume above the tier. Full detail: Stripe Billing pricing, or stripe.com/billing/pricing.

What actually decides it

Merchant of record and tax liability

Neither tool is a merchant of record: you are the seller, so you register, collect and file sales tax and VAT yourself. Chargebee Flow includes built-in sales tax (US, EU VAT and global taxes) and Anrok. Stripe Tax Basic adds 0.5% per transaction where you are registered. If you want someone else to carry the tax liability, Stripe sells Managed Payments (generally available since April 29, 2026) at 3.5% per transaction on top of processing, or look at Paddle vs Stripe.

Gateways, payouts and FX

Chargebee supports 40+ gateways, including Stripe, Braintree, Adyen, PayPal Commerce, GoCardless and Checkout.com, so you can add a second processor for a region or for redundancy. Stripe Billing counts volume processed on and off Stripe, but it is built around Stripe Payments, where international cards add 1.5% and currency conversion 1%. If you sell mostly in USD on Stripe, this criterion barely matters.

Dunning

Both include automated retries. Stripe Billing includes Smart Retries and recovery automations; Chargebee Flow includes basic and smart dunning for online and offline payments.

Revenue recognition

Both sell it separately. Chargebee RevRec is a paid add-on, quote only; Stripe Revenue Recognition is a separate Stripe product. If you are deciding whether you need either yet, read our SaaS revenue recognition guide.

Usage-based pricing

Chargebee Flow includes 100M usage events a month. Stripe keeps basic metering (up to 100M events a month) in Billing pricing and moved advanced usage billing to Metronome, whose acquisition closed January 14, 2026, at $0.04 per 1K events plus 0.8% of billing volume on its startup tier. For the revenue side of metered plans, see usage-based pricing.

Migration cost and lock-in

Stripe Billing's pay-as-you-go option has no contract; the $620+ plans are 1-year subscriptions that auto-renew, with cancellation taking effect at the end of the term. Chargebee Flow is billed monthly with no annual commitment, and Enterprise is an annual contract. The harder lock-in is data: subscriptions, plan catalogs, coupons and invoice history all have to be mapped when you move, and Chargebee's bulk data export to S3, GCS or Snowflake is a paid Enterprise add-on. If Chargebee runs on your Stripe account, the cards stay in Stripe's vault and Chargebee keeps only a token, the last four digits and the expiry date (Chargebee docs), which makes a later switch between the two billing layers less painful than a gateway change.

Not hands-on tested yet: we have not run a live account on Chargebee or Stripe Billing. Prices and terms come from Chargebee's and Stripe's published pricing pages and help docs, read on October 11, 2026.

Frequently asked questions

Can Chargebee use Stripe as the payment processor?

Yes. Stripe is one of Chargebee's 40+ supported gateways. You then pay Stripe's processing fees plus Chargebee's billing fee, and you do not pay Stripe Billing's 0.7%.

Is Chargebee cheaper than Stripe Billing?

Not on the platform fee at the volumes we model. At $10K MRR Chargebee costs $80 a month vs $70; at $50K, $400 vs $350; at $250K, $1,724 vs $1,500 on Stripe's annual plan. Chargebee's 2026 change removed the free Starter allowance that used to make it cheaper early on, unless you qualify for Chargebee for Startups (free to $1M cumulative billing).

Who are Chargebee's competitors?

Stripe Billing, Recurly, Maxio and Zuora on the billing side, and merchants of record such as Paddle. See Recurly pricing and Chargebee alternatives.

Which handles revenue recognition better?

Both charge separately for it, and we have not tested either module. Compare them on your own contracts: multi-element deals, usage and prepaid credits are where tools differ.
