Mercury Alternatives for Startups (2026): Relay, Bluevine, Rho, Brex, First Citizens (SVB), Novo and Chase
Mercury is free and its wires cost nothing, so few startups leave it over price. They leave because an account was closed or frozen, because a founder lives outside the US, because the team spends abroad at a 3% card FX fee, or because cash under $250K earns no interest. The right alternative depends on which of those is your reason: Bluevine for non-US owners, Relay for interest from the first dollar and cheaper card FX, Rho for a near-copy of Mercury with a lower treasury minimum, First Citizens (the former SVB) for a real bank, Brex if you want a card first. Every option except First Citizens and Chase is a fintech working through partner banks, as Mercury is.
Why founders leave Mercury (dated evidence)
- Closures of non-US founders. "I'm asking for a founder in my network who just got their Mercury account closure notice. They are a non-US resident (Kyrgyzstan) with a US C-Corp." (Hacker News, March 27, 2026). An earlier one: "They closed my account with very short notice back when they decided to purge all customers with any connection to Ukraine." (Hacker News, June 2, 2025).
- Funds held after closure. "All my money is tied up in this closed account" (Trustpilot, October 9, 2026). "They locked down both of our accounts and didnt give a reason." (Trustpilot, October 1, 2026). Mercury's Trustpilot page scored 3.9 from 2,857 reviews when we read it, 67% five-star and 21% one-star.
- Partner-bank changes. "Mercury has forced me to change your partner's banks THREE TIMES." (Trustpilot, October 1, 2026). Mercury's pricing page named Evolve Bank & Trust until at least October 9, 2024 and now names Choice Financial Group and Column N.A. A user tied card fraud to the 2024 Evolve breach: "my Mercury.com Business card was fraudulently charged ... for close to US$4,000" (Hacker News, July 10, 2024).
- Cost. 3% on non-USD card spend, 1% on non-USD wires, no interest on checking or savings, and a Treasury fee of 0.15% to 0.60% a year. On the fee: "Mercury Treasury takes a hefty cut (0.6%)" (Hacker News, March 17, 2023).
Closures with funds held are not unique to Mercury: Trustpilot shows the same complaint about Brex ("my remaining business funds are still being held") and Relay ("Relay froze our account"), both October 7, 2026. Whichever you choose, keep a second account elsewhere.
How we chose
Accounts a US seed-stage SaaS company can open without a sales process, checked on five things: who holds the deposits and the FDIC coverage, eligibility for founders outside the US, wire and FX fees, yield on idle cash (product and date), and 2026 ownership or status changes.
The alternatives
Relay
Fits if you hold less than $250K or spend abroad on cards. Savings interest from the first dollar: 1.19%, 1.87% or 3.21% APY by plan as of September 17, 2026, FDIC-insured through Thread Bank, with up to $3M via its sweep. Card FX is 1%, cash deposits work at AllPoint ATMs. Wires cost $5 to $8 domestic and $20 to $25 Swift. Plans are $0, $30 and $90 (Scale, shown as a discount from $120; Relay's fee schedule says $120). Relay's help center says every owner needs an SSN. Full comparison: Mercury vs Relay.
Bluevine
For founders outside the US. Bluevine accepts owners in 25 supported countries (including the UK, Germany, India, Canada and Israel) with a passport and an EIN, "No U.S. SSN required", for a US LLC or corporation. Checking pays 1.3% APY up to $250K on Standard (only in months with $500 card spend or $2,500 client payments), 1.75% on Plus ($30) and 3.0% on all balances on Premier ($95, waived with a $100,000 average balance and $5,000 card spend). Deposits sit at Coastal Community Bank with up to $3M coverage. Wires cost $7.50 to $15, and FX wires carry 1% to 1.5% on top. Bluevine agreed on September 28, 2026 to be acquired by Valley National Bancorp (about $340 million, closing expected early 2027). Its "up to 6.045%" Treasury figure is a high-yield bond fund, not cash: do not compare it with money market yields.
Rho
Closest to Mercury in model. $0 plan, $0 domestic wires, ACH and checks, 1% on foreign-currency payments and an optional $15 Swift fee. Rho Treasury has the same 0.15% to 0.60% fee scale as Mercury but a $50K minimum instead of $250K: 3.20% net in IJTXX, a government money market fund, below $2M (as of October 9, 2026), under SIPC. Card cashback up to 1.25% on daily repayment, 2% on Rho Platinum if payroll, revenue and half your assets run through Rho. Rho does not publish a card FX fee. Checking is $250K FDIC; its savings "up to $75M" is "program capacity", "not a guarantee". Rho needs a US operating address or one US-based owner with an SSN.
Brex
Card first, now owned by Capital One (announced January 22, 2026, completed April 7, 2026). Brex is still not a bank: checking is at Column N.A. ($250K), Vault sweeps up to $6M across 24 program banks, Treasury is DGVXX plus a Brex return under SIPC. Essentials is free, Premium $12 per user. Wires are $0, but Brex sets the FX rate on non-USD wires "at our sole discretion". Points are worth 0.6 cent as cash, card FX is up to 3%. You need a US EIN, incorporation, operations and a physical address, plus $50K cash if funded or over $500K revenue (it was $1M until summer 2026). Brex changed how it calculates its quoted yield between September 2 and October 3, 2026, and prints no as-of date. More: Mercury vs Brex, Brex pricing.
First Citizens Innovation Banking (formerly SVB)
A real bank. Silicon Valley Bank was closed on March 10, 2023, and First-Citizens Bank & Trust took over its deposits on March 26, 2023; svb.com now redirects to First Citizens. Essentials Checking is free "for up to three years", then "$50 per month plus outgoing wire fees" (live page, October 13, 2026). An August 2026 copy said $25 waived at $15,000 with 15 free wires a month, so ask which applies. Wire fees are in a schedule you get from a relationship manager. The Startup Money Market Account pays 3.56% APY over $1M and 2.63% from $50K to $1M on the whole balance (as of September 30, 2026), as an FDIC-insured deposit. First Citizens serves "non-US clients on a cross-border basis".
Novo
Free and simple, for a small team that rarely wires. 0% APY, no Treasury, $250K coverage at Middlesex Federal Savings. Outgoing domestic wires are "up to $45" in Novo's fee schedule and "up to $30" in its help center; international transfers go through Wise. All owners must live in the US with an SSN.
Chase for Business
A big bank with branches and no partner layer, $250K standard coverage. Business Complete is $15 a month, waived with a $2,000 daily balance among other options. Outgoing wires are $25 domestic and $40 international in USD online; FX wires carry an undisclosed spread. Debit card FX is 3%; the separate Ink Business Unlimited card pays 1.5% with no FX fee. No interest on Business Complete. Online opening is limited to sole proprietors, single-member LLCs and corporations with one authorizing representative; other companies open at a branch.

Fees per year: plan, wires, FX on non-USD payments and card FX. The activity profile is our assumption: pre-seed 2 domestic wires, 1 non-USD payment of $3,000 and $4,000 card spend a month (10% non-USD); seed 6 wires, 4 x $6,000, $20,000 card; Series A 15 wires, 12 x $10,000, $80,000 card (15% non-USD). "Not published" = the vendor does not publish a fee this activity needs; we do not estimate it.

Yield per year on cash above operating needs (Bluevine: on all cash), with cash of $500K, $3M and $12M and operating cash of $150K, $500K and $2M (our assumption). Money market funds and bank deposits carry different risks; the rates are not interchangeable.
Mercury is already near the bottom on fees; leaving it saves money only if your cost is card FX (Relay 1%, Bluevine and the Chase Ink card with no fee of their own). The money market funds sit within half a point of each other, so leaving Mercury Treasury buys a lower minimum (Rho $50K) or an FDIC-insured deposit instead of a fund (Relay, Bluevine, First Citizens), not a much higher rate. Cashback adds $2,160 to $3,240 a year at seed on the cards that publish a rate. Run your own numbers.
How to move
- Open the new account before closing Mercury, and fund it with one month of burn.
- Redeem Mercury Treasury to cash. MRGXX can settle the same day if you move before 3pm ET.
- Send new payment details to customers, payroll, tax agencies and recurring vendors; replace cards on every subscription.
- Reconnect QuickBooks, Xero or NetSuite feeds and keep Mercury open for one full billing cycle to catch late payments.
Not hands-on tested yet: we have not opened an account with Mercury or the alternatives listed, which requires a US company and identity checks. Fees and rates come from each vendor's published pricing page, fee schedule and help center, read on October 13, 2026.

Is there a Mercury alternative that is a real bank?
First Citizens Innovation Banking (the former SVB) and Chase are banks. Relay, Bluevine, Rho, Novo and Brex are fintechs. Mercury has preliminary conditional OCC approval for its own bank (April 24, 2026), not yet open.
