Best AI CFO Tools in 2026 (and AI CFO vs Fractional CFO)

"AI CFO" now covers four different products. Some put an AI on top of a financial model you build (Adlega, Abacum). Some run an agent on your live ledger, bank and payroll and message you when something changes (cfo.ai, Nume). Some are AI bookkeeping with a finance chat attached (Digits, Puzzle, Zeni). And some are agent platforms for enterprise finance teams (Datarails, Concourse). Prices run from free plans to tens of thousands of dollars a year. For a founder without a finance hire, the realistic choice is between a self-serve model with AI (free to about $50 a month), an AI agent on live data (about $50 to $1,500 a month) and a human fractional CFO (most often $5,000 to $7,000 a month). None of the AI tools replaces a CFO's judgment on a term sheet or an audit.

We read every vendor fact below on the vendor's own site on October 22, 2026. Prices come from published pricing pages; where a vendor only quotes on request, we say so and label any third-party figure. Adlega is our product, and we placed it by fit, not first.

The four kinds of AI CFO

  • AI on your model. You (or the AI) build a forecast; the AI explains numbers, checks assumptions and runs what-ifs. Works before you have much data. Examples: Adlega, Abacum's AI Modeler, Sturppy Plus's CFO Chat.
  • AI agent on live data. Connects read-only to your accounting, bank, payroll and billing, keeps a model current and alerts you. Needs real systems to read. Examples: cfo.ai, Nume.
  • AI books with a finance chat. The core product is bookkeeping; an assistant answers questions about the books. Examples: Digits, Puzzle, Zeni.
  • Agents for finance teams. Named agents for close, variance, reporting and planning, sold on quote to companies with a finance function. Examples: Datarails, Concourse.

For founders without a finance hire

Adlega (our product)

A SaaS-specific financial model with an AI CFO built in. You describe the business and the AI seeds the assumptions; the model produces a 36-month forecast of MRR, burn, cash and runway. The AI answers from your model, explains how any number was calculated down to the formula, and flags churn, CAC or growth inputs that look out of line with benchmarks. It does not connect to your bank or ledger today: integrations and forecast vs actuals are listed as "rolling out" on our pricing, so it is closer to "AI on your model" than "agent on live data". Free plan with one model; Founder $49 a month or $490 a year; Growth $149 a month. More in what an AI CFO is and our head-to-head cfo.ai vs Adlega.

Nume

Nume calls itself an AI CFO for businesses of 1 to 100 people. It connects to accounting (QuickBooks, Xero, Zoho Books, e-conomic, Odoo), open banking, Stripe, Shopify, CRMs and ad platforms, then watches for changes and reaches out, forecasts cash and runway, tracks budget vs actuals, runs hiring what-ifs, reviews bookkeeping for miscoded entries and drafts reports. Access is read-only. Pricing is credit-based: a free plan with $150 of credit and no card, Pro from $50 a month for 250 credits up to $2,000 a month, and Multi-Entity Consolidation from $250 a month. The page does not say how many credits a typical task uses, so estimate your monthly spend in the free tier first.

cfo.ai (formerly Runway)

Runway Financial renamed itself cfo.ai on September 10, 2026 and rebuilt the product around Ari, which "connects to your ledger, bank and payroll, keeps one model of the company current, and tells you what changed before you ask". Integrations listed include NetSuite, QuickBooks, Rippling, ADP, Mercury, Brex, Stripe, Paddle, Salesforce, HubSpot, Snowflake and Google Sheets. It is aimed at founders, chiefs of staff, fractional CFOs and finance teams.

Forecastr

Not an AI CFO in the agent sense: every plan includes a dedicated financial analyst who builds and updates the model, and Essentials adds a built-in AI chatbot. Essentials is $5,000 a year and Growth $10,000 a year, billed annually; CFO Services are priced on request. Pick it if you want a person and treat the AI as a convenience. See Forecastr vs Adlega.

AI on your books

Digits

An "AI-native general ledger" that automates bookkeeping and reconciliations, with "Ask Digits", described as "Your AI financial assistant", on every plan. Essentials is $65 a month, Core $100, and Pro $250 (marked "Coming soon", adds budget vs actuals), with a 30-day free trial. Its pricing page does not use the term "AI CFO". Useful if your books are the problem; it is not a forecasting tool.

Puzzle

Accounting software for startups with an "AI Suite" (AI chat, AI cowork and AI close) on every plan, metered in AI credits: 25 lifetime credits on Starter and Core, 100 a month on Complete, 300 a month on Scale. Core adds cash, burn, runway and margin insights. Starter is $30 a month ($24 billed yearly) with the first 2 months free; Core $72 ($58); Complete $120 ($96); Scale $360 ($288). See Puzzle pricing.

Zeni

The hybrid: "An AI Accountant and AI CFO, backed by finance experts". Its AI CFO can "Project your runway and cash-out date" and "Model scenarios like new hires or spending cuts" from the live books. AI bookkeeping with a dedicated finance team starts at $549 a month ($494 billed yearly); human fractional CFO plans start at $1,599 a month plus a $2,000 setup fee. See Zeni pricing.

For finance teams

Abacum

FP&A platform whose AI Modeler "builds, edits or explains" a model "on live data inside your workspace", from a plain-language description or an uploaded Excel file, and shows what will change before it changes it. Right-clicking a cell shows the sources, formulas and assumptions behind an AI result. No published price; buyers on Vendr report a median of $43,750 a year. See Abacum pricing.

Verified on abacum.ai/product/intelligence on October 22, 2026; Vendr figure read the same day.

Datarails

FP&A platform with Datarails AI: a Strategy Agent, a Reporting Agent that "analyzes your actuals to uncover drivers", a Planning Agent for ad-hoc forecasts and scenarios, scheduled AI insights and Storyboards for narrative reporting. Every plan is quote-only; Vendr reports a median of $33,300 a year (range $16,231 to $62,037). See Datarails pricing.

Verified on datarails.com/platform/ai and Vendr on October 22, 2026.

Concourse

An agent platform "for enterprise finance teams": you describe a workflow, it builds an agent you can test and schedule, with named agents for flux and variance, close, forecast, AR and collections and weekly business reviews, and an audit trail of every action. Calculations run in code rather than in the model's text. No price is published (its FAQ asks "How much does Concourse cost?" without answering); buying starts with a demo. Not a founder tool.

Also seen: Sturppy Plus

Sturppy Plus adds "CFO Chat", described as GPT-4 powered, on top of live data, for businesses with at least $10K a month in revenue or $250K raised. Its price is not published. The wider Sturppy site still shows a 2023 footer; see Sturppy alternatives.

AI CFO vs fractional CFO

A fractional CFO is a part-time human, usually on a monthly retainer. Our fractional CFO cost page collects the published rates: about $1,600 to $10,000+ a month, most often $5,000 to $7,000 (Preferred CFO), with entry retainers from $1,600 (Burkland), $1,750 (Pilot) and $2,000 (Graphite Financial), and hourly marketplace rates of about $125 to $210 for the middle half (GoFractional). A full-time CFO runs about $300,000 to $500,000 in salary (Zeni).

What an AI CFO can do that a fractional CFO usually does not

  • Answer at 11pm. Ask why cash drops in month 8, or what happens to runway if you hire two engineers, and get an answer in seconds rather than at the next monthly call.
  • Re-run everything on every change. A model-based AI recalculates all scenarios when one driver moves; a retainer is usually scoped to a set number of updates.
  • Watch continuously. Agent tools such as cfo.ai and Nume alert you when a number moves between meetings.
  • Cost less. The entry plans of Adlega, Nume and cfo.ai each cost less a year than a single month of a standard $5,000 to $7,000 retainer.

What an AI CFO cannot do

  • Own the judgment. Whether to raise now or extend runway, how to price, which term sheet to sign. The AI informs these calls; it does not make them.
  • Sit across the table. Investor meetings, board meetings, bank and lender negotiations, and audit questions need a person with a name and accountability.
  • Fix bad inputs. An AI on messy books produces confident, wrong numbers. Clean bookkeeping comes first (see startup bookkeeping cost).
  • Know what is not in the data. A verbal commitment from a customer, a key hire about to quit, a covenant in a loan agreement: a human CFO hears about these; a model does not.

Which to use when

  • Pre-seed and seed, no finance hire: an AI model tool or a spreadsheet covers the forecast, runway and investor questions. A retainer is usually premature.
  • Revenue, a bank and payroll to watch: an AI agent on live data starts to pay for itself, and some founders add a light fractional retainer for the monthly review.
  • Raising a priced round, facing an audit, or multi-entity: hire a fractional CFO. Keep the AI tool; it makes their hours go further. Our fractional CFO for startups guide covers how to pick one.

How to choose an AI CFO tool

  1. Check what it reads. If you have little data, an agent on live data has little to watch. If you have a lot, a model you type into by hand will fall behind.
  2. Ask to see the working. A finance AI should show which inputs and formulas produced an answer. If it cannot, you cannot check it before an investor does. Our post on AI financial analysts covers the risk of confident wrong numbers.
  3. Price the usage, not the plan. Credit-based tools (Nume, Puzzle's AI credits, cfo.ai's AI credit top-ups) can cost more than the headline price. Watch the first month.
  4. Confirm the data stays read-only and is not used to train models; Nume and cfo.ai both state read-only access on their pages.

FAQ

What is the best AI CFO for startups?

It depends on what you have. Before revenue, a self-serve model with AI (Adlega has a free plan, then $49 a month) is enough. With live accounting, bank and payroll data, an agent such as Nume (from $50 a month) or cfo.ai (from $375 a month billed yearly) can watch them for you.

Can AI replace a CFO?

It can replace much of the modeling, explaining and monitoring work. It cannot replace the judgment, accountability and relationships: negotiating a round, answering an auditor or a board. Most founders use AI first and add a fractional CFO when a raise or audit calls for one.

How much does an AI CFO cost?

Founder tools in this list run from free plans up to $1,500 a month (cfo.ai Growth, month to month) or $2,000 a month (the top Nume Pro credit tier). Finance-team platforms are quote-only; Vendr reports medians of about $33,000 to $44,000 a year for Datarails and Abacum.

Is an AI CFO cheaper than a fractional CFO?

Yes. The entry plans of the founder AI tools here cost $0 to $6,000 a year. A fractional CFO retainer most often runs $5,000 to $7,000 a month, so $60,000 to $84,000 a year.

What does an AI CFO actually do?

Depending on the tool: builds and updates a forecast, explains how numbers were calculated, projects runway and cash-out date, runs what-if scenarios, compares budget with actuals and alerts you to changes. See AI CFO: what it is and how founders use it.

Is cfo.ai the same as Runway?

Yes. Runway Financial renamed itself cfo.ai on September 10, 2026. runway.com is now an unrelated AI video company.

Where Adlega is weaker

Adlega is self-serve: you build the model yourself. The AI CFO guides you and explains every number, but no analyst builds it for you, so a founder who wants the work done by a person may prefer a done-for-you service. Its integrations (Stripe, Chargebee, Google Analytics, Google Ads), forecast-vs-actuals and scenario comparison are still rolling out on the Growth plan, so today most numbers come from the drivers you enter rather than synced data. And it is built around SaaS metrics, so a business without recurring revenue will get less from it than from a general-purpose planning tool.
